While I can’t speak for everyone, grabbing the latest edition of Marquee at the local movie theater was pretty damn important to a movie buff before the internet and the IMDB made it so easy to see what was coming out in the near future. Collector that I am when it comes to movie memorabilia, I’ve got a number of these tucked away including a few true treasures like the edition with Harrison Ford on the cover for a movie called Raiders of the Lost Ark.
This edition from February 1993 covers a number of topics including letting us all know about some big summer releases headed our way and a look at the young actors on the scene who are expected to be around for a number of years. It’s a fun look back to see who made the cut and who has kind of faded from the limelight.
Considering I’ve always been a movie poster collector as far back as when dad would give me a five dollar allowance and I would spend it on one sheets that a local comic book shop had in stock, Marquee always gave me a look at the posters that were headed my way if they caught my eye. Posters like Michael Douglas’ Falling Down.

In the now playing section you can read up on the latest lampoon of a popular hit film. Subbing for Glover and Gibson are Jackson and Estevez.

For the Summer of ’93 we can expect some heavy hitters you may recall …

This bulletin reminded me that Harrison Ford wasn’t the first choice to take on the role made famous by David Janssen.

Having discovered John Woo’s The Killer on VHS I was excited to see this one coming out with Van Damme and yes indeed I did see it at the theater. Still the actor’s best film for my money thanks to the stylish director and Lance Henriksen as a memorable villain.

Other titles advertised for summer release in this point form highlight include The Last Action Hero, The Firm, Sliver, Striking Distance, Hot Shots Part Deux!, Dennis The Menace, Super Mario Bros., Cliffhanger, In the Line of Fire and a film which resurfaced last October thanks to a long awaited sequel, Hocus Pocus. Of the 13 titles featured in this article I’ve seen all but Sliver and Super Mario Bros. After all these years I not likely ever will.
Here’s another one of those full page ads and it’s coming soon to a theater near you..

The main focus of this months issue are the rising stars including cover girl Bridget Fonda so let’s have a look at the namedrops that occurred.

Along with Bridget who backed out of the Hollywood scene in 2002 the article clearly highlighted a pair of faces we still see on a regular basis. Cage and Snipes.

Next up are three featured actors to keep an eye on. Ethan Hawke, D.B. Sweeney and Miss Nancy Travis who I noticed recently turned up in the fun Netflix series, The Kominsky Method.

And then we come to the new names on the scene like Brad.

Along with Brad Pitt the article goes on to drop names including Rosie O’Donnell, Juliette Lewis, Kristy Swanson, Jason Priestly, Gabrielle Anwar, Uma Thurman, Winona Ryder, Marisa Tomei, Rosie Perez, Christian Slater, Lolita Davidovich, and some young guy by the name of Keanu Reeves.
Canadian movie theaters …. Canadian content and Mike Myers was on the rise.

Another full page ad with Cage and Jackson starring in a comedy I recall seeing on VHS. Maybe time for a revisit and yeah these boys are still going strong 30 years later in 2023.

So here we are a full 30 years removed from this edition of Marquee magazine and their suggestions of who we should keep our eyes on. How do you think they did? Got a favorite in here?
Till next month’s throwback edition, keep watching those classic films and dropping in to say hi.
Still rate Michael Douglas as my all-time favourite actor. I really loved FALLING DOWN (1993).
Watching that clip has me thinking it’s time for a rewatch. I’ve always like him though I haven’t seen everything he’s in. A few gaps in there I need to fill. I remember seeing Black Rain at the theater and loving it. As for Kirk Douglas, right up there on my list of all time faves.
Also saw BLACK RAIN (1989) in the cinema. I’d nomina
Sorry Mike, that last comment got cut off… you might say it ‘fell down’. My TOP FIVE FILMS for M.D would be… COMA (1978) – THE CHINA SYNDROME (1979) – THE STAR CHAMBER (1983) – DISCLOSURE (1994) – THE GAME (1997).
China Syndrome a must. Great flick. I need to see Coma again, been ages. Along with Black Rain I would recommend Romancing the Stone and point people to some lesser titles like American President, Ghost and the Darkness and found him hilarious in One Night at McCools. Not forgotten on me is the fact that he produced One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest. Arguably the greatest film he’s ever been associated with and in part because Kirk who wanted to play lead was too old and passed the rights on to him is basically how it went if I recall.
I’ve never heard of the magazine Marquee before, but it sounds like a lot of fun Mike. Having only discovered in High School that films were my primary passion, I missed out on a lot of those types of magazines to indulge in what I love, but better late than never I always say. Love the magazine’s simplicity and the detail it gives to the films and actors/actresses of the day.
As I mentioned before the internet it was a major source for us film fans of what was coming in the months ahead making it invaluable.
Never heard of Marquee either. We had similar circuit-led magazines – ABC Film Review was the most prominent and from time to time the Odeon chain entered this arena but I’m pretty jealous of Marquee. Looks an excellent addition to anyone’s collection. Keep these mag articles coming.
will do and trying to keep it varied as so many of the mags I collected as a kid were of the monster variety.
A lot these mags only lasted a few issues so it’s great to hear of any.
Indeed, I have some old monster magazines that are numbered as opposed to having a month on them but suspect they had a short run.
