From this vantage point looking back, Clint Eastwood was a top director for my money from the very beginning. It took the Academy and the critics years to anoint him as a top drawer director. Unforgiven gave him that distinction as well as a much deserved Academy Award for his efforts.
As I went back and watched some of his early efforts with my sons as they got older I was very impressed with his skills behind the camera and had to wonder why a film like The Outlaw Josie Wales never garnered any Oscar nominations in the technical categories. It’s that pretty to look at. The Eiger Sanction as well.

1973 brought Breezy. It would take another 15 years till Clint directed a film he didn’t star in as well. That was 1988’s Bird.

I love this one…. Eastwood’s coming right out of the poster to take you down.
