I find it amazing how so many people in my circle of friends really have no idea who Robert Taylor is. It’s a shame that he hasn’t somehow stayed on the edge of the mainstream with names that general film fans recall from yesteryear. Hopefully this chat will get you watching some of his great titles.
I agree! great actor and pretty face for sure, like you & Widmark, I will watch anything with Robert in it. However haven’t seen Law & Jake Wade! ALL good ones you named here for suggestions and favourites, I would add Westward the Women and Johnny Eager, even Quo Vadis.
We will have to remedy you not seeing Taylor go head to head with Widmark. Those are good titles you mentioned and I also like Rogue Cop.
I know I do have Jake Wade so I should press play on it soon 🙂
I don’t know for sure why Taylor isn’t better remembered, but he ought to be. You highlighted lots of good titles there and I’d add Westward the Women, which is a very different and quite compelling western from Wellman. Also, Anthony Mann’s deeply affecting Devil’s Doorway and Nicholas Ray’s color noir Party Girl.
I had intended to mention the Mann film as I love his work. When I wing it I inevitably miss one or two titles. Never a big fan of Party Girl. Maybe I should give it a rewatch.
Waterloo Bridge, A Yank At Oxford, Above And Beyond and Waterloo Bridge are just top notch films. When I think of Taylor those films always come to mind. The end of Bataan with him firing away with the machine gun is etched in my mind forever.
Solid picks there. I enjoy the 3 films he did with Eleanor Parker. Above and Beyond, Many Rivers to Cross and Valley of the Kings. So many good films to discuss when it comes to Taylor.
